Getting a Driver’s License
To obtain a driver’s license in Newfoundland and Labrador, follow these steps:
1. Get a Learner’s Permit (Class 5 Level 1)
● Download the Driver’s Handbook.
● Take the exam online at MyGovNL.
● Book an appointment for a vision test at a Motor Registration Division (MRD) office.
●Must be at least 16 years old (parental consent required if under 19).
2. Graduated Driver’s Licensing (GDL) Program
● After passing the test, hold the Level 1 license for at least 12 months (or 8 months with an approved driver training course) and take lessons from any authorized Driving school.

3. Pass the Road Test and Get the Class 5II license
● After holding Level 1 for the required period, pass a road test to obtain a Level 2 license.
● Level 2 must be held for 12 months before getting a full Class 5 license.
●After completing Level 2, you receive your unrestricted Class 5 driver’s license.

Exchanging a foreign license in Newfoundland
If you’re from one of the following countries, you may exchange your valid driver’s licence for an NL Class 5 licence without taking written, vision, or road tests:
● United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Isle of Man, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Ukraine.
To qualify:
● You must be 17 years or older.
● Your licence must be valid (not suspended, cancelled, or revoked).
● If expired, it must be no more than 5 years past expiry.
● If your country isn’t listed above, you’ll need to follow the aforementioned Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program.
Note: Your previous driving experience may be considered to potentially reduce waiting periods.
