Sawa Mental Health Program

Syrian Canadian Foundation Collaboration

Amal Unite & Empower is proud to collaborate with the Syrian Canadian Foundation (SCF), an organization founded in January 2016 that empowers newcomers and people of diverse backgrounds while promoting cross-cultural exchange within Canadian society.

Through this collaboration, we support the establishment of the Sawa Program in St. John’s, an integrated initiative that combines mental health support with free English language learning for Arabic-speaking newcomer mothers. The program provides a culturally conscious, safe space where women can connect, share experiences, and strengthen their wellbeing while building new skills.

The 14-week program welcomes more than 30 women from diverse Arabic-speaking backgrounds. Sessions cover meaningful themes such as belonging, home, and identity. Through guided discussions, group activities, and vocabulary practice, participants develop new tools for self-expression while reflecting on their own emotions and experiences.

The Sawa Program also focuses on positive parenting and children’s mental health, offering workshops that help mothers develop coping strategies, improve their own wellbeing, and better support their children’s growth.

This collaboration reflects our shared belief that empowerment begins with safe spaces for dialogue, learning, and community connection.
